Dashashwamedh Ghat Boat Booking

The Ghat at the Centre of Kashi

Dashashwamedh is the principal ghat of Varanasi and, by most accounts, the oldest in continuous use. Its name records the ten-horse sacrifice — dasha ashwamedha — that Brahma is said to have performed here. It sits directly below the Kashi Vishwanath temple complex, which is why it became the city's ritual centre and has stayed there.

Every evening, without exception, the Ganga Seva Nidhi performs the aarti from raised platforms at the water's edge. Seven priests in matching robes move multi-tiered brass lamps in synchronised arcs, accompanied by conch shells, bells, drums and chanting, for about forty-five minutes.

The crowd on the steps runs from several thousand on a quiet Tuesday to well over a lakh on festival nights. Because the priests face the river, the ghat crowd watches the ceremony from behind. Boats sit in front of it. That is the whole argument for booking one, and it is a stronger argument here than anywhere else on the river.

Getting to Dashashwamedh — Read This Before You Book

Dashashwamedh is unreachable by car. The final approach is on foot through Godowlia, and on a busy evening that walk takes far longer than any map predicts.

Vehicles stop at Godowlia Crossing

From there it is a 600-metre walk down a lane that is dense with people, cycle-rickshaws and shops. Allow 20 minutes, not five.

We meet you at a fixed point

Every Dashashwamedh booking includes a coordinator who meets you at an agreed landmark and walks you to the boat. Sent as a map pin the day before.

Board by 5:15–6:00 PM

Depending on season. Late arrivals lose the front position, because position is allocated by departure order — not by what you paid.

Consider boarding at Assi instead

If the walk is a problem, board at Assi Ghat and cruise down. Same ceremony, far easier access. See Assi Ghat boat booking.

Around Dashashwamedh

The ghat sits at the heart of old Kashi, and most guests build a half-day around it rather than just an evening.

The Kashi Vishwanath corridor is a five-minute walk up; the queue is shortest early morning. Manikarnika Ghat, the principal cremation ground, is fifteen minutes north along the riverfront — photography of the pyres is prohibited and we ask guests to respect that. Vishwanath Gali, immediately behind, is the city's main market lane for silk, brassware and the sweets Banaras is known for.

Questions

Dashashwamedh Ghat Boat Booking FAQs

How do I get to Dashashwamedh Ghat?
+
Vehicles cannot reach it. Cars, taxis and autos stop at Godowlia Crossing, and from there it is a 600-metre walk through a dense market lane — allow 20 minutes. Every booking with us includes a coordinator who meets you at an agreed landmark and walks you down.
How do I get a front-row boat for the Ganga Aarti?
+
Position is allocated by departure order, not by price. We push off around 5:30 PM to take the front line before the shared fleet arrives. Book two to three days ahead — the front row is limited and fills first.
What time should I reach Dashashwamedh Ghat for the aarti?
+
Board by 6:00 PM from April to September and by 5:15 PM from October to March. The ceremony itself starts at dusk and runs about 45 minutes.
How much does a Dashashwamedh Ghat boat cost?
+
A rowing boat is ₹2,000 for 1.5 hours, a front-row motor boat with a coordinator and post-aarti ghat cruise is ₹3,999 for two hours, and a Bajra for 20 to 50 guests is ₹12,499. Prices are per boat.
Can I visit Kashi Vishwanath temple on the same evening?
+
You can, but the queue after the aarti is long. Most guests do darshan early in the morning and keep the evening for the boat. We can arrange both on the same day as a combined booking.
