Dev Deepawali and Dev Diwali Are the Same Festival
If you have been searching for both, you are searching for one night. Dev Deepawali is the Sanskrit-derived spelling; Dev Diwali is the everyday Hindi form. Both mean the Diwali of the Gods, both fall on Kartik Purnima, and in 2026 both refer to the evening of 24 November in Varanasi.
The legend is specific: Lord Shiva destroyed the demon Tripurasura on this day, and the gods descended to Kashi to bathe in the Ganga and light lamps in gratitude. Varanasi has marked it with mass illumination since at least the eighteenth century. What is comparatively new is the scale — the current ghat-wide lighting programme dates from the 1980s and has grown every year since.
